This gateway building served as the entrance to the Military Air Academy of the Luftwaffe in Dresden between 1935 and 1945. In January 1935, the Dresden Military Academy introduced a special course of studies for Luftwaffe officer trainees. The construction of a military air school began on the grounds directly adjacent the newly constructed civil airport in May 1935, and one year later the school started operations. The Luftwaffe trained pilot officers in the sprawling military complex with its more than sixty buildings – including five aircraft hangars –until March 1945. In 1937, the civil airport had also been taken over in its entirety by the Luftwaffe; it became the Dresden-Klotzsche Airbase. Transport, fighter and ground-attack units operated from this airbase until 7 May 1945.
