Dresdner Mahndepots – KUNSTPLAN

LOCATION 40: Webergasse 19

40Although numerous fires started in the city centre after the air raid on 13 February 1945, the residential building at Webergasse 19 remained undamaged. When bombs again began to fall on Dresden several hours later, Mrs S. fled to the building’s cellar with her seventeen-month-old son and accompanied by her mother. The building was hit and the cellar collapsed.
”I had my son in my arms and I covered his face with a wet cloth because of the smoke. (… ) I don’t know when my child died, or my mum. I was myself unconscious at the time.”
Mrs S. was rescued one and a half days later by a Wehrmacht unit. Of the eighty-nine people who had sought refuge in the cellar, only six survived.
