On 18 October 1944, the Reich Leader of the SS announced the formation of the Deutscher Volkssturm (German People’s Army). A good week later, the local groups of the NSDAP began to register all of Dresden’s men aged from sixteen to sixty, accompanied by mass demonstrations of the Sturmabteilung (Storm Detachment), the Waffen-SS (Armed SS), the Hitler Youth and other organisations. On 4 November 1944, the registration appeals were declared to be over.
At nine in the morning on Sunday, 5 November 1944, a large-scale ceremony was held for the public swearing-in of two Dresden Volkssturm battalions. Hitler Youth groups, a Wehrmacht guard of honour and infantry units from the officer cadet school also paraded on the site of the Ilgen Arena.
