Dresdner Mahndepots – KUNSTPLAN

LOCATION 12: Güterbahnhof Neustadt

12The Dresden-Neustadt goods station, administered by the Dresden III Office of the Reichsbahn (German Railways), served as a “loading station for military transports” during the Second World War. It was therefore of substantial importance for the many military units stationed in Dresden on a permanent or temporary basis.
The goods station was also the point from which deportations of Jews began. Transports left this station for the Riga ghetto on 21 January 1942, and on 3 March 1943 for Auschwitz. Of the approximately 1,500 people on the Auschwitz transport – among them 293 Dresdeners from the “Judenlager Hellerberg” – about 820 were selected directly upon arrival and murdered in the gas chambers.
