LOCATION 10: Bayrische Str. 16 (was Bismarckstraße 16/18)

Ort 10The Dresden headquarters of the Gestapo (Secret State Police) was housed in the former Hotel Höritsch until February 1945. Its Section II B 3, later IV B 4, organised the repressive measures against Dresden’s Jewish citizens, including the deportations. For the Jews of Dresden, thedespised building became one of the symbols of their oppression. Many of them were ordered here for interrogation which often involved physical mistreatment or ended in arrest.
In addition to the “Judenreferat” (Jews Section) of the Gestapo, it was above all the “Judenabwehrstelle” (Office of Resistance against Jews) of the NSDAP Dresden leadership at Wiener Straße 13 which was responsible for coordinating the persecution of the city’s Jews.
