Dresdner Mahndepots – KUNSTPLAN

LOCATION 1: Barbarossaplatz 1

Ort 1This residential building at Barbarossaplatz 1 was owned by the Dresdner Gas-, Wasser- und Elektrizitätswerke AG (Dresden Gas, Water and Electricity Works), which rented out part of the spacious ground floor to the NSDAP until May 1945. Here the NSDAP set up the offices of the “Barbarossa” local group, one of a total of 81 local groups in the city of Dresden.
Not only were the neighbourhood-scale local groups the place where the all-encompassing ideological influencing and surveillance of those living in their catchment areas took place, but this was also where the practical measures of national socialist policies which affected daily life were to be implemented. In the course of the war, the NSDAP local groups increasingly took on functions of civil administration as well as military administration, for example the establishment and deployment of the Volkssturm (People’s Army).
